Winchester have been producing market leading shotguns since 1887 and have continued to produce reliable, quality guns with a variety of different designs since that time. Their original 1887 repeater shotgun featured an unusual lever-action loading mechanism which marked their creations out as uniquely Winchester. However, they quickly changed the lever-action in favour break-barrel loading and pump-action designs as these provide a more efficient action. Winchester have been accredited with having the best ever pump-action shotgun with their Model 1912 or M12. The design of this firearm created the base for the development of modern pump-action shotguns from both Winchester and their competitors.
