Description

BROWNING ‘DOUBLE AUTO’ 12G SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN.

2 SHOT Double Auto Browning 12g Semi-Automatic Shotgun dating all the way back to 1959 production. (As information direct from Browning US). Apparently detail online is / WAS incorrect in that production of these guns ran from 1952 to 1971. With only around 67,000 ever made its not a big number for any to survive. Testament to just how good they are that they do!

For more history you are probably best simply checking details out on Wikipedia where I just amended dates. 26-09-2023. Or other accurate sites.

Becoming quite collectable as people ‘discover’ just how well designed and superbly well made these guns are. (As the even older Auto 5 options were that John Browning originally designed). Also the fact they are getting harder and harder to find means they are likely to only go one way in value. Even if they don’t you have a gun you can have some great shooting with. Just enjoy while you wait and see.

This gun came in from a previous customer who had put a small collection of 5 together over many years. He WOULD like them to find an equally appreciative new home.

27 ½” (700mm) None Standard Barrel. This having a Raised and Ventilated ¼” (6mm) Cross Filed Sight Rib with Single Brass Bead to the muzzle. Fixed X-Full choke so will throw an extremely tight pattern. Great for longer distance and far more Sporting shots. Standard 2 ¾” (70mm) Chamber. Stock pull is 14 ¼” (363mm) and brings in an overall length of 47” (1195mm). Scales show a weight of 8 lbs 1 ½ oz (3.674 Kg) so this is a Standard Model that’s gained a bit in 65 years!
Generally Tidy enough condition considering its age. Steel Action with just about all of the original finish now absent. The original Pressed Horn Butt Plate is still in place too. Rounded Prince of Wales Pistol Grip to a Well Patterned Walnut Stock. The original varnish finish also with a few light chips and marks. Chequering could benefit from a re-cut but the gun IS perfectly usable exactly as it is. This forend does have very minor damage to rear top on both sides. Directly from someone trying to strip barrels the wrong way. If you are not SURE just ask.
All you have to do is simply pull the small catch back at the back / bottom of the forend. GENTLY drop the back end down approx. ½” and then slide the barrel from the action. Job Done!
These are not particularly noticeable unless you specifically LOOK for them directly down from above. None of these are anything more than aesthetics. The gun will very likely function perfectly well for another 60 plus years exactly as it is now.

The action has all but lost the original Blued finish but zero rust so purely patination and fare ware. It would easily re-finish too so ideal for an out of season project gun.
A Simple but Nice Panel of Scrollwork Engraving with a Zig-Zag pattern Border all around the outer edges. Roller Ball style safety positioned to the rear on the Trigger Guard.

NO. NOT STEEL SH-T PROOF BUT DO PLEASE READ ON:
THERE ARE more and more None Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern day shooting. IF its so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters how is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?

Anyway, take a look for yourself:

NOW, to TRY and help speed up availability I WILL also suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ALL of us start to ask whoever we buy from why they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET. YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons. RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
