DEFRA’s decision to commit £120,000 to eradicating the last 50 ruddy duck in the UK made headlines in the papers, aghast at the idea that it was going to cost in excess of £2,000 to kill each one. Of course the stories were nonsense, the £120,000 representing more than the simple expenditure arising from bringing this programme to a close. Now if we can just get DEFRA to put up the funding to control the absurd numbers of Buzzard and Grey Squirrel we will be getting somewhere.
